EXPLORING THE WATER SURROUNDING VICTORIA HARBOUR
With warm weather approaching, Victoria Harbour is perfectly positioned to make the most of the waterfront. Experience a sense of tranquillity with the bustling city in full sight as you head out onto the water and celebrate spring.
Here are some must-do water-based activities in Docklands to try:
A kayak tour is a great way to experience Melbourne from the water. Taking off from Victoria Harbour, you can travel down the Yarra River and Melbourne’s waterways and experience Docklands and surrounds from a whole new perspective.
With more than 100 years of history, the Alma Doepel is a three-masted topsail schooner that is currently undergoing restorations in Victoria Harbour. Skilled and unskilled volunteers can register to help with the restoration project, or you can lend your support by donating funds. You can also attend a tour of the Alma Doepel which runs every Tuesday afternoon from 12pm-2pm if you’d like to see the ship in person.
Melbourne’s Tall Ship, The Enterprize, can give you a taste of life at sea. Whether you choose a short journey or an overnight stay in Port Phillip Bay, The Enterprize is a voyage you’re unlikely to forget. It’s also available for small charters of 45 people if you’re looking for a different local adventure for your next work or social event.
Australia’s only AquaDonut allows you to grill and chill as you float around the bay. These boats run on an electric motor and feature LED lights, a shade umbrella and a built-in BBQ. It’s a great day out on the water for up to 10 people – no boating licence required. And, when you’ve got your land legs back, head across the bridge for a drink at Tap831 or Neo Lemonade.
Dragon Boat Clubs
Combine your fitness routine with your love of the water by joining the Melbourne Flames Dragon Boat Club. This team sport is great for building up your fitness, socialising and meeting new people. The Melbourne Flames currently welcome new paddlers every Sunday morning for a free introductory session where you can experience a dragon boat for yourself.
Port Phillip Ferries
If you’re thinking of making a day trip down to The Bellarine Peninsula or Geelong, why don’t you skip the highways and take to the water? Port Phillip Ferries operate regular shuttles from Victoria Harbour to Port Arlington. With Wi-Fi and an onboard café, the journey just might be better than the destination.
