How to bring your 2D ideas to life

3D printing is no longer a distant idea, it’s something you can access here and now. From house keys to car parts, the number of physical objects you can produce from a digital file is astounding. But this technology is not just for engineers and scientists; anyone can print a 3D object with the help of a specialist. You don’t have to go far to find one with a team of 3D printing experts right here in Victoria Harbour.
In just a few hours, the professionals at 3D Printing Studios can help bring your ideas to life – all you need to do is walk in with an idea of your own. With the festive season here, this could make for a unique gift, so we spoke to 3D Printing Studio’s designer Mauricio Hidalgo who answered some of our residents’ most frequently asked questions.
What is 3D printing?
3D printing is the process of creating a three-dimensional object from a digital file using a specialised printer. 3D Printing Studios can work with anyone who wants something produced three dimensionally. It’s especially significant for designers, because it makes prototyping so easy, which means they can get feedback on their models in a short amount of time.

How does a digital file eventually take a 3D form?
There are several different types of printers we use, which will differ according to the size of what you are printing. For a basic model, you upload a digital file to a printer that slices up the image into layers. In the printing process, these layers are glued together to form a three-dimensional object from the bottom up.
What can you print in 3D?
The options are limitless. At 3D Printing Solutions, we export everything from basic keys to complex motor parts and architectural models. While plastic is the most common material we use, we can also print objects in other fabrics such as nylon, steel and resin. Scientists are now experimenting with other materials such as metal and have started producing edible food, which means 3D printed chocolate is not far off the horizon!
What’s the most common thing you print?
These days, it’s hard to find a sector that hasn’t been affected by 3D printing. Manufacturing processes around the world have adopted 3D printing techniques to help solve their problems and improve efficiencies. We have a lot of engineering students and interior designers visit us to print prototypes, but we can help anyone bring their ideas to life. All you need to do is walk in.
How long does 3D printing take?
3D printing doesn’t take long to complete. While it depends on the size of the model and the complexity of the file, most objects only take 3 – 4 hours to print.
3D Printing Solutions run basic workshops for beginners at their studio for $200 per person. During a three-hour session, you will learn the basics of 3D printing and have the opportunity to print your own 3D object. If you’re interested in learning more, give the team at 3D Printing Solutions a call on 9088 2107 or visit the Meetup website to book yourself into a class.
