Who let the dogs out?

23 March 2017

There’s a reason they say dogs are a man’s best friend. Loyal, loving and providing bags of entertainment, many dog-lovers would claim their canine companions are key members of their family than they are pets.

One of the best bits about owning a dog is that it encourages you to get out and about, explore your local area and meet new people. That’s why Victoria Harbour is collaborating with The Dock Community Hub to celebrate Neighbour Day, an annual celebration of community, with a Dog Pawty!

The Docklands Dog Pawty is a free event that will be held on March 26, and will provide a great opportunity to meet your neighbours and their four-legged friends in a relaxed and community-orientated environment. Dog owners and lovers alike are invited to join in the celebrations from 12pm at Buluk Park, next to the Library at the Dock.

“The Docklands Dog Pawty will be a great doggie day out and chance to get to know your neighbours. You’ll get to pamper your pooch with our line-up of fun-filled activities and treats, including dog demonstrations, games and puppycinos.

For the humans in attendance, we’ve got a reading lounge with the Library at the Dock’s recommended doggie-themed reading list. We’ll even have a ‘paw prints’ photo wall. Plus, perk up with a cup of coffee from social enterprise Wheelly Good Coffee, who will be selling caffeinated pick-me-ups from a pop-up stall in the park.

You’ll get to see the Command Dog Training School’s prodigies in action, with a team of dogs and handlers demonstrating how it’s done with a display of obedience training and obstacle course negotiation.

Also on hand will be the City of Melbourne’s animal management team to provide information to dog owners about owning pets in the city.

We’re also encouraging people to get out and about and explore the local area. Docklands is a beautiful place to go for a walk by the water, so pick up one of our self-guided Docklands walking maps from the library and take your pet for a harbour-side stroll.  Please note though, this is a family and child-friendly event, so remember to keep your dog on a leash and bring plenty of plastic bags to pick up any accidents!
