We have some exciting news, meat lovers. Say ‘ciao’ to Saluministi – Melbourne’s favourite boutique Italian salumi bar which has just opened its doors in Victoria Harbour.
If you’re yet to experience Saluministi’s home-made authentic Italian salumi, carnivorous share platters, simple and tasty paninis or decadent desserts, you’re certainly in for a treat!
The brain child of business partners and brothers-in-law Frank Bressi and Peter Mastro, Saluministi was established in 2014 as a natural extension of their shared passion for high quality, authentic Italian delicacies. The duo have been making salumi their entire lives (and also as part of a dedicated salumi making group for a decade), and with their salami receiving rave reviews at the annual Melbourne Salami Festa, they felt the time was right to establish a physical presence – much to the delight of their fans.
Saluministi gained a cult-like following during its semi-permanent stint in North Melbourne over the last year, which according to Frank is testament to the eatery’s unique but simple menu – an ode to honest, real Italian cuisine with a twist.
“Our menu is full of family recipes. We wanted to give people a taste of what it’s like ‘growing up Italian’ whilst at the same time putting a modern twist on our favourite traditional dishes and experimenting with new flavours and styles,” Bressi explains.
Saluministi managed to really hit a note with the relaxed, no-frills atmosphere at their North Melbourne store, and say they’ll be bringing the same vibe to the new site at Victoria Harbour.
“Our customers say Saluministi feels like home – there’s cool tunes, amazing aromas and vibrant staff. They also love our coffee and our stovetop coffee is all part of the experience. We serve a special cremino (sugar-cream) with our stovetop coffee, the way it is traditionally served in Naples, which people instantly fall in love with. They’ll sit here for hours, sipping away and nibbling on the biscotti,” says Bressi.
Saluministi’s menu will feature a range of new recipes as well as crowd favourites, including the famous trio of panini. As Bressi’s personal motto goes: “there nothing better than a good panino”.
“Our core trio includes one panino featuring Roman style roast porchetta; one with a crumbed pork cotoletta; and another with a house-made pork and fennel sausage. My nonna always told me pork and fennel were the ultimate combo. It works with the porchetta, and it works in the pork and fennel sausages. Simple and tasty.”
If you’re more of a sweet-tooth, fear not. Dessert consists of various Italian style sweets such as bomboloni (doughnuts with various fillings), cornetti (Italy’s answer to the croissant) or petite Sicilian-style cannoli filled with a gorgeous mix of ricotta, mascarpone, chocolate and candied peel. Delizioso!
As Bressi and Mastro open the doors to their Victoria Harbour store they’re simultaneously planning the unveiling of their Melbourne CBD store which will be open for business in Flinders Lane this August.
