“I’m also a local and love living in the Docklands area. It has a great sense of community and views to die for – I love living in the sky.”

After witnessing men squirm uncomfortably in the waiting rooms of unisex salons, the idea for an exclusive men’s only hair salon and spa – Man What a Fuss! – was born and 15 years later is proving a winning concept for founder Kate Allen.

Now offering pampering to the men of Docklands from its new Merchant Street salon, the original Man What a Fuss! City salon was started in 1998, when the idea of ‘manscaping’ was a little more foreign. “Back then men weren’t even putting product in their hair. Some were using soap and were moisturiser phobic which women know is a no go. If they did want a treatment there was really no where for them to go. I witnessed first-hand men trying to keep a low profile while waiting to get a body treatment, pedicure or wax in a unisex salon,” says Kate.

Man, What a Fuss! was established to cater for this gap in the market – a full service salon exclusively for men where they could go and feel comfortable and pampered and relaxed. The services, the products and the atmosphere all designed exclusively for men. “We opened the doors on a little shop in the city which was 112 square metres. I really was starting from scratch but word of mouth proved really strong. One guy would come in one day and the following week 30 of his friends or colleagues would come along.

“We started a business, but also a school in the sense we were educating men about how to look and feel better. We don’t just do a standard hair cut, we also offer facial waxing (ears, nose and brows), an express facial and head and neck massage. The one hour body massages and remedial treatments are our most popular.”

The city salon has continued to thrive and grow over the past 15 years and recognising the fact that the industry was expanding and that Man, What a Fuss! was already well established and strong, Kate partnered with Ray Scicluna, owner of the Docklands salon, to franchise the business.

They currently have 2 new stores in the pipeline with a total of 27 stores targeted throughout Australia and New Zealand. There are also plans to expand on their hair and skincare product range, Ammo for men. The idea to open a store in Victoria Harbour was a ‘no brainer’ according to Kate after they conducted research into their demographic. “Victoria Harbour is a real growth area and a lot of our clients in our city store are banking and corporate based, so with NAB and ANZ and the continued expansion of the area it made sense to have a store here,” says Kate. “I’m also a local and love living in the Docklands area. It has a great sense of community and views to die for – I love living in the sky.”
