Top tips from local fitness professionals

This month we’re celebrating health and wellness in Victoria Harbour with exclusive offers from our local fitness retailers. To help keep you motivated and on track with your goals, we asked local fitness professionals to share their top tips and inspirational quotes for a positive mindset and to keep you moving throughout the year.

Jean from Push! Fitness wants you to use the buddy system. “My top tip for anyone wanting to get into shape is to do it with a like-minded friend. It is far more fun to work out with a friend and there will be mutual encouragement and motivation when either one isn’t feeling up to it.”

If you don’t have any friends who want to make the same fitness goals then gym classes or group training sessions can help give you the support you need.

Michael from Fitstyler Bootcamp thinks we all need to push ourselves more. “Our motto is: if it hurts and you can’t do anymore burpies, just do another one.” This method of pushing yourself to complete just one more helps you to see your goals and abilities stretch – do one more than you think you can or one more than last time and you’ll always see an improvement.

Whether you are too tired, want to cook an elaborate dinner or must binge-watch a TV show tonight, there’s always a reason not to hit the gym. “We tell our clients that we are stronger than our excuses.” Bryan from InFitPTv tells us. Don’t focus on why you don’t want to go to the gym, instead think about how great you’re going to feel afterwards.

When we asked Marvin from Jab MMA Fitness for his top tips he was brimming with ideas. “We’re always telling our clients, don’t limit your challenges, challenge your limit. And remember, it doesn’t end when you leave the gym.” You need to look after yourself in every aspect of our life – that means eating a balanced diet, drinking lots of water and getting a great night’s sleep.

If you want to lose weight and tone up, then Kaya from Crossfit Docklands thinks you might be wasting your efforts if you’re sticking to one type of exercise – such as the stationery bike.

“The most effective way to achieve that ‘toned’ and athletic look is to build some muscle and shed the fat. That’s why we recommend strength training combined with traditional cardio methods which is what we offer with CrossFit Metcon.”
