Life can be fast paced, which means it’s easy to get caught up in the rush and forget to appreciate the world around you.
Taking the time to do so can have many benefits for your overall health and wellbeing. We’ve teamed up with our new local health clinic Docklands Health to provide some tips on how to be more mindful.
What is mindfulness?
According to Docklands Health, mindfulness is a mental state achieved when you focus on the moment, while acknowledging your feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations. It can help you cope with tension, while making you feel more relaxed and productive in your everyday life.
Like the body, your mind needs to be trained, so here are some mindfulness tips from Docklands Health’s General Manager, Dr Michael Edgley.
Make a start
People often get caught up striving for perfection and forget that the most important thing to do is get started. You don’t need to sign up for an expensive meditation course to learn how to practise mindfulness, as it can be as easy as downloading a free app and finding a peaceful place to sit along the Victoria Harbour promenade. This mentality can be applied to other areas of your life such as starting a new exercise routine, making a conscious decision to eat healthier food or pursuing a business opportunity.
90% of your brain stimulation comes from moving your body, particularly your spine and hips. This means a lifestyle with a lot of sitting and little exercise can hamper your physical and mental wellbeing. Try to increase your incidental physical activity by taking the stairs, riding to work or getting off the tram early to squeeze in some extra steps. We also encourage you to go for a walk during your lunchbreak, and make use of our outdoor exercise equipment across from Buluk Park. It can be a great way to clear your mind, while moving your body and avoiding the 3pm work slump.
Keep it simple
When searching for fulfilment, it’s best to keep things simple. This month, Docklands Health will be expanding its services to include yoga and pilates, with private and group sessions taking place in the clinic. Yoga is designed to shift your mindset to be in tune with your body and your breathing.
Remember, mindfulness is the foundation of progress. A lot of patients come to physicians for a solution to their physical injuries, but need to get in the right headspace first.
