Trainers from F45 Docklands share their secrets for staying motivated in the new year

For many, the new year is a time for change. Common resolutions revolve around aiming to eat better and establishing a regular fitness routine. While we all set out to stick to our goals, market research shows that less than 8 per cent of Australians follow through with their New Year resolutions, with more than a quarter abandoning their mission before March.

But don’t give up hope. We’ve spoken to Craig Tellis from F45 Docklands South to find out how he sticks to his health and wellness goals. The trainer has been helping Victoria Harbour residents get fit for more than three years, so he knows a thing or two about how to prioritise your health.

Here are Craig’s top tips for adopting a healthier lifestyle in the new year.

Find your purpose

Craig says that F45 Docklands’ regular clients have a very clear objective. Goals such as ‘getting in better shape’ can be vague and make it difficult to monitor progress. Be specific when setting your health goals and focus on what’s important to you. After all, your goal should make you want to get up and get going every morning. Whether it’s to run 5km without stopping or build up your strength so you can keep up with the kids, make sure your goal is tangible before you commit.

Be engaged

Going to the gym can be tough, especially if you don’t know the difference between a lat pulldown and a chest press, so make it fun by working with people who can show you the ropes and teach you some great tips and tricks along the way (no shortcuts, though!).

Find a pal

According to Craig, having a work-out buddy can make exercise fun and engaging, and is a great way to achieve your New Year’s resolutions in general. If you’re struggling to find time to catch up with your friends, working out together could be a great way to get fit and have a laugh at the same time! Knowing you have a friend for support can also make it easier to commit and stick to a routine.

Don’t fall into fads

One of the worst things you can do is pay too much attention to lifestyle magazines and take advice from unqualified celebrities when making your New Year resolutions. Craig says that you should stay away from fads that can be unrealistic and set you up for failure and make sure you choose evidence-based dietary plans instead.

F45 Docklands South have moved into a brand-new studio, twice the size of their old gym. Surrounded by glass windows, you can exercise with a beautiful view of Victoria Harbour. They’re currently extending their timetable to include outdoor sessions and an outdoor chill and warm up section just in time for summer. This means it’s the perfect time to lock in a free seven-day trial and kick off the new year with a series of serious sweat sessions!

Over to you - go ahead and write down your goals, stick them on a fridge and make 2019 your best year yet.
