Kids' Own Publishing is a not for profit arts organisation that turns the conventional publishing model on its head – empowering children, families and communities from diverse cultural, social and linguistic backgrounds to work alongside artists to write, illustrate and share their stories.
Kids’ Own has been pioneering children’s community publishing in Australia for 10 years, bringing the stories of children all over Victoria and around the country to life, and in the process seeding a love of books and reading. Learn more about the Kids’ Own story here.
Kids’ Own Publishing drop-in book-making workshops
Come and write, illustrate and publish your own story at the new Library at the Dock.
Kids’ Own Publishing’s 8-page hand-folded book workshop is facilitated by Kids’ Own Publishing teaching artists who are skilled in empowering children and young people to write their own stories, to illustrate these stories with collage techniques and to create a ‘hot dog’ book which is ‘published’ on the library’s colour photocopier. One copy of the book will stay at Library at The Dock for others to enjoy and a second copy of the book, and the original, will be taken home by the young author.
These workshops provide children with the inspiration and confidence to produce their own stories using techniques that can be replicated at home, school and in community settings.

Kids’ Own Publishing 100 Books Exhibition
Children’s community publisher, Kids’ Own Publishing will be publishing their 100th book this year. To celebrate this milestone all 100 books will be on hard-copy and digital display at the the Library at The Dock.
All 100 books are about things that matter to children. Where they live, what they like, the language they speak. Playing, dreaming, cooking, counting, jumping, learning. The books celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and a number have been published in language editions other than English such as Nuer, Dinka, Arabic, Tetun, Fataluku, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Kriol and Rembarrnga.
The exhibition is a chance for Kids’ Own Publishing to celebrate their achievements as an organisation, share the many stories they have had the privilege to publish with children and families.
The Library at The Dock's children's space features interactive tables with touch screens so children can read a selection of the 100 books digitally. Children will also be able to write and illustrate their own books in a number of ways, on library iPads using the newly developed app wePUBLISH, or at hand-folded book-making workshops open to the public on Saturday June 14 and Saturday June 21.
When: Exhibition runs from Saturday 31 May
