9 of the best local activities for kids

19 June 2017

Keeping your kids entertained during the school holidays is always a challenge, especially in winter. But with so much going on in Victoria Harbour and the surrounding areas, you’ll never run out of ideas. Here are some of our favourite school holiday activities in Docklands this month:

  1. Library At the Dock
Readers (and your bank balance) will delight at a day spent trawling the shelves for something new to read. Our Library At The Dock also holds regular activity sessions for kids that will keep them entertained for hours. These school holidays our activities include a drop-in crafternoon and science storytime.

  2. The Light House
There’s nothing like a light show to get the kids excited, so bring them down to see the Light House – a world-first interactive lighting installation on the outside of 888 Collins Street. With fireworks over  Docklands at the start of July, you’ll be able to make the best of the early nights and explore the city after dark.

When it comes to free activities you can’t beat a playground, and Buluk Park is a favourite among kids in the know. With cafes, restaurants and retail nearby you can make a day of it.

For those who are after a little adventure on the high seas in their school holidays, you can sign up for a tour on Melbourne’s Tall Ship, The Enterprize. Kids are challenged to find and ring the ship’s bell when they first arrive and learn how to operate a traditional tall ship.

  5. Kayak Melbourne
For kids over the age of 10 who need something a little more active to keep them entertained, you can take a Kayak Tour of Melbourne starting from the Dock (right next to the Library). Depending on the tour you select, it may include fish and chips for dinner or a visit to the top of the Skydeck.

While it might be a bit difficult to make it to a game during the school term, the holidays are the perfect time to see your favourite AFL team play at Etihad Stadium, like St Kilda vs Richmond on July 8, or North Melbourne vs Freemantle on July 9.
